 OUR FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS

The main reason that people adopt alternative energy forms on their home is not purely financial. The main benefits are of course a reduction in personal greenhouse emissions, and an increased sense of independence from the electricity grid. There is also at this time, an element of being part small but growing ground swell push towards a more sustainable future. Being part of the solution than part of the problem can have benefits that are not measured purely in financial means.  However an indication of when money invested is paid back, can be  a useful. However because there are so many variables to consider payback is a very inexact science.

If you are looking to install renewables and are hoping to make money out of it you are going to  be disappointed in the short term. These technologies are expense and fossil fuels are cheap at the moment in comparison. However as time goes by and because of growing energy scarcity alternative energy will in future be comparable in price with once abundant fossil fuels.

Payback calculator

Click on this link to access a excel file. Here you will be able to calculate the payback times for a Photovoltaic PV system, or any other type  of alternative energy system. Ok, this is only a guide. Really it is very difficult to calculate a payback due to lots of different variables, energy inflation, changes to ROC entitlements and deals from the electricity companies are near on impossible to predict.

However, a PV system has a very long life and the system does have a monetary value. If you were to move house the PV would increase your house's value. With the new HIP coming in next year having solar PV would I'm sure move our house into the top A band.

I have gone with a yearly interest rate of 6% and a starting annual saving of £321. You can change these details for your own proposed alternative energy system that you may have plans to install on your house. I hope you find the calculator useful. The calculator should then show how many years it will be until you might have recouped your costs. Please remember its only a guide and gives a really inexact payback time and payback is not really worth getting too hung up about but it is something that must at least be considered.

Details for how we have calculated our annual saving can be found on the Connecting to the Grid Page.
