These are normally inserted into a pipe through which the water flows. Like any source of alternative energy the closer the installation is to where the power will be used the better. This is because energy is lost over any distance. Having a stream close to your house the better!
These types are turbines are only suited to a few select locations in the UK mainly the more mountainous regions of the UK. They do require some maintenance as debris can build up around the turbine after time and high flood flow conditions.
They can be grid connected or used in more remote locations off grid through the use of batteries to store the electricity generated.
