Heat pumps are a way of transferring heat from one source to another. A domestic fridge is a heat pump as it works on the same principle. Heat is transferred from the (source) inside the fridge to the (sink) coils outside the fridge. Electricity is needed to run the compressor which drives the system( obviously this would be better if it came from a renewable source.) We won't ever be installing a heat pump at our house because our garden is terraced and not really large enough. Due to this we haven't really spent a long time researching this subject.
